What is an Audiologist? | The Hearing Center in Clark & Freehold N.J.: What is an Audiologist?

Audiology is the science of hearing. Audiologists are the primary health-care professionals who evaluate, diagnose, treat and manage hearing loss and balance disorders in adults, infants and children. Audiologists prescribe, fit, and dispense hearing aids and other amplification and hearing assistance technologies. An audiologist must have a master’s or doctoral degree in audiology (Au.D.). Most audiologists today have a clinical doctorate, as it is now the entry-level degree for the profession.

Audiologists have extensive training, both academically and clinically. In addition, the audiologist must be licensed or registered by their state to practice audiology after obtaining over 2000 supervised hours of clinical experience and fulfill annual continuing education requirements.
